About Acne & Scars

PIMPLE & ACNE-SCAR REMOVAL TREATMENT

Most of us have faced pimple or acne breakouts at some point in our lives. According to a study, acne is the most common skin problem and affects around 200-300 million people between the ages of 12 and 25 years in India. In recent years, even older people have started experiencing breakouts due to stress and lifestyle.

You may consider acne as a simple skin infection, but it is not. It occurs due to complex interaction of changing hormones, sebum and a bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes. Since it is a serious skin concern, opting for home remedies like washing your face frequently, drinking lots of water etc. might not turn out to be effective. Hence, we suggest seeking professional help.

The first step towards knowing about acne starts with understanding our skin. To keep our skin healthy and supple, our skin’s sebaceous or oil producing glands produce sebum. Acne breakouts happen when oil and dead skin cells clog up our skin’s pores, helping the bacteria to multiply and leading into acne breakouts. As the bacterium multiplies, our immune system reacts to it in the form of pus, redness, itchiness or pain. Most common acne prone area is your face. However, some people may experience this on other body areas like chest, arms, neck and back. To know how to prevent acne breakouts, visit our Skin And Hair Library

Your hormones, lifestyle, stress, heredity is what triggers acne and hence it is essential that you visit an expert dermatologist who will diagnose the right cause of your acne and prescribe the right treatment for best results.

It is not just acne, there are other problems associated with it like pigmentation and scars. Even when acne is healed, it may leave behind ugly marks and scars. This happens when the skin does not heal properly leading to depressions or marks. Dark spots left behind after the acne heals is called Post-inflammatory-hyperpigmentation (PIH) and is a very common side-effect. It is caused due to increase in pigment production under your skin. These can be usually treated using chemical peels or advanced lasers which are generally safe. If you are suffering from acne, you should immediately seek professional help as acne can lead to permanent scarring, which might hide your skin’s beauty.

Pigmentation can be classified into epidermal (superficial), dermal (deep), and mixed. So, basis how severe the skin problem is, our Specialist will recommend the right pigmentation treatment which will be a combination of chemical peels or lasers to say goodbye to pigmentation.

Skin CONCERNS

Active Acne & Pigmentation

Active acne may be mild, moderate or severe depending on the number and type of breakouts. Each needs different treatment approach. Acne can be classified as –

Mild To Moderate Acne

When the skin layer above the pores become thick, dead skin cells are shed into the pores, which blocks them. If you notice, you will be able to see the plugs that block the pores in the form of tiny spots. These are blackheads and whiteheads, also known as comedones. Many people misinterpret the black spot of blackheads as dirt. Comedones can be accompanied with small spots called pimples or papules. In some cases, acne does not progress beyond this mild-to-moderate stage, where you can see a number of small pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. If this phase of acne is not treated appropriately, it can flare up and lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), commonly referred to as acne marks. The discoloration caused in this phase may last for several months and is often more clear and noticeable in darker-skinned people. Also, if collagen is not healed completely, it can lead to scars which are difficult to treat and correct.

Acne & Pigmentation

The ugly marks that you observe after the acne is gone are called Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation or PIH. It is caused due to excessive melanin production and is a result of acne related inflammation. PIH can be seen as a flat area of skin discoloration and may last for months. The chances of PIH are high if you touch and aggravate acne. Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is different from a scar which is harder to treat. Thankfully, there are several treatments available for treating PIH and the right treatment can fade the PIH spot quickly. At Altmis, a dermatologist will evaluate the PIH and recommend the correct treatment for it.

Acne Scars

When the skin does not heal properly after an acne breakout, it leads to scars. If you suffer from consistent nodular and cystic acne lesions, you are at a very high risk of developing permanent acne scarring. This is particularly true when a region is affected by overlapping acne outbreaks, with no opportunity to completely heal in-between.

Inflammatory acne most often leads to scarring, as the rupture of the follicle creates an injury that the skin is unable to repair. This injury to the skin damages collagen fibers and may cause small depressions, such as pitted or icepick scars, to develop. Deep, pitted acne scars result from damage to multiple layers of the skin and thus need a more aggressive treatment with lasers and other advanced technologies like Fractional Laser, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) etc. These technologies try and repair damaged tissue (scars) allowing fresh, new collagen to be produced in its place.

Scars are different from Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). Properly treating active acne is key to preventing scars from forming. First and foremost, avoid picking on acne. Picking or popping pimples prevents the skin from healing properly and will only exacerbate irritation.

Depressed acne scars: These are the most common type of scars that results from acne. Depressed acne scars can be of three types – Rolling scars, Boxcar scars and Icepick scars.

Raised acne scars: There are times when your body produces too much of collagen while healing the skin and the underlying tissue. This leads to developing a raised acne scar, which is more common in people with darker skin.

At Altmis a dermatologist will evaluate the scar and recommend the best treatment possible. We offer a range of advanced services like dermaroller, fractional lasers, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) that will decrease the appearance of acne scars.

Y.D. Skin Tightening

This is an advanced technology that is ideal for skin lifting, tightening, reducing pore and overall rejuvenation. This is a minimally invasive service where tiny micro-needles deliver controlled Radio Frequency (RF) energy directly into various depths of the skin to regenerate collagen leading to firmer skin.

Before the start of the procedure, a topical anesthesia is applied making this service virtually painless. There might be some redness on the treated areas for 3-4 hours initially. Occasionally, a fine scab will be formed, which is part of the healing process. Most patients see excellent results in 3 sessions. This may vary according to your skin condition and a Altmis specialist will be better able to assess and advise you.
